The emergency lights cast a sickly yellow glow, but for Mark, it felt almost… pleasant. He’d always enjoyed the quiet of empty spaces, and this elevator, with its metallic scent and the absence of any other noise, was as quiet as one could hope for.

He took a deep breath, letting the stale air fill his lungs. He felt a light tingle in his fingertips, like he was plugged into the world in a way he hadn't been before. “Relax,” he murmured to himself, even as Emily hyperventilated beside him. “We’re fine.”
